Digital Botanical Garden Development and Its Value-Added Applications
Website: http://140.131.21.138:8080

The origin of this NDAP (National Digital Archive Program) research project was a digital archive research conducted by Taiwan Forestry Research Institute (TFRI) and funded by the National Science Council (NSC: 93-2422-H-054-001) in the year of 2004 . In that project, TFRI digitized its internal collection of forest resources. This one-year research was also a NDAP national project and funded by NSC (NSC 95-2422-H-144 -001 - ) in the year of 2006. The main purposes of this project were to demonstrate how this national project utilized the digital content of TFRI to develop commercial applications and education services in a creative fashion. For the commercial applications of the digital content, this project developed a series of stone-painting merchandises for internal decoration in cooperation with an international business “Artilize” company. The team also produced “the language of plants” for eight types of series pave products, such as plum, orchid, bamboo, Chrysanthemum, lotus, peony, narcissus, and plantain. The research team, with industry collaboration, used the digital content authorized by TFRI to develop the color and white series pave, used to decorate our life environment. The merchandises were developed and marketed based on this “university-industry” cooperation mechanism.

As to the educational applications and services, this project developed four sketching books for children aged from 5 to 10, based on the TFRI digital content. The four sketching books were also made possible in an e-book format to sell on line and in DVD. The project also describes how the “university-industry” cooperation mechanism worked, the development processes of the merchandises, and the market and promotion strategy of those merchandises.

In addition, the research team, with industry collaboration, used the digital content authorized by TFRI to develop a PDA guiding system for the Taipei Botanical Garden, a subdivision of TFRI. The PDA system introduces plant appearances, names, categories, and living environment of the Taipei Botanical Garden. In addition, the PDA system develops mapping games of plants, interactive games of cultivating plants for educational purpose, and other mobile content for introducing the plants of Taipei Botanical Garden. Finally, a project website was established to introduce all the above mentioned materials, including an online purchasing system to sell the creative merchandises developed by the project.
